Dental Implant History

Where did Dental Implants Come From?

Have you ever wondered how dental implants became what they are today, and why more and more people are seeking out Dr. Ken Versman, Dr. Doug Heller, and Dr. Eric Beckman?  Dental implants and other cosmetic practices have been around since 600 AD, and Periodontal Associates is on the cutting edge of dental implant therapy.

Implants are not a new phenomenon.  Taking good care of your oral hygiene has always been a priority since early civilizations, and Periodontal Associates urges everyone to continue to make oral care a habit or even obsession. Implants have been around for hundreds of years; however, dental implants have become more and more successful throughout its evolution.  Dr. Ken Versman, Dr. Doug Heller, and Dr. Eric Beckman are specialists here in Denver, CO, and every implant they perform successfully gives their patients a cosmetically beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime.

But before Periodontal Associates, the Mayan civilization was investing their time in developing the first version of dental implants.  Archaeologists have uncovered ancients skulls displaying teeth made out of other inorganic materials.  The first dental implants were carved from jade, different stones, or even seashell fragments.  These materials may seem unconventional, because they are, but proof that implants are conceivable is the fact that even seashells were seen to be fused to the jawbone.  Also, a human jaw bone found in Slovenia 6,500 year old showed traces of beeswax fillings.  The founding researcher stated, “This is perhaps the most ancient evidence of prehistoric dentistry in Europe.”

If particles found on the beach can fuse to the bone to make a somewhat stable implant, think about how durable, comfortable, and what high-quality the dental implant used by Dr. Ken Versman, Dr. Doug Heller, and Dr. Eric Beckman are!

The advances in dental implants that made them as successful as they are today was unexpected.  An orthopedic surgeon discovered the ability for small a small titanium cylinder to heal to bone back in 1952.  The capacity for bone and titanium to fuse is call osseointegration. Drs. Versman and Heller were one of the first U.S. dentists to study directly with the inventors of today's implants. They have educated dentists, periodontists and dental students about dental implants and implant procedures for many years, and have lectured on the subject in the Denver/Aurora, Colorado area, nationally and internationally!

Dental implants were first used for patients who could not properly use dentures due to the increased loss of bone in the jaw.  However, it is best for osseointegration to be used in dense bone which is mostly seen in the front of the lower jaw.

Most recently, dental implants are used to replace anywhere from one to multiple missing teeth.  The original implants were made in a one-size-fit all design with no variety in width or length.

The first versions were also manufactured to be very smooth and sleek. Now dental implants come in an assortment of shapes and sizes to better fit each individual as well as the particular prosthetic tooth.  There texture has also been replaced with more grooves, resembling a screw, to enhance the fusing process.

Now that you have learned about dental implants, you will finally realize that there is a way to improve your quality of life. Even if you have lost just one tooth – whether it is a new situation or something you have lived with for years – chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself. Dr. Ken Versman, Dr. Doug Heller, and Dr. Eric Beckman are uniquely qualified to provide a full range of implant dentistry procedures. They have been performing a full range of implant dentistry for more than 20 years at Periodontal Associates in the Denver/Aurora, Colorado area.  At Periodontal Associates, The Dental Implant Team, we are the market leader and we are driving the development of new dental implant standards and protocols.

Drs. Versman, Heller, and Beckman wish to share this exciting information with you and answer all of your questions.  Please give Periodontal Associates a call today at (303) 755-4500 to visit our Aurora, CO office.  We serve patients from Denver, CO and all surrounding areas. What are Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Yes, that’s right, Drs. Versman, Heller, and Beckman are Denver’s specialists in dental implants, and if you are reading this, then you are in the right place.  But what are dental implants, who need them, and how are they placed?

What are implants?
Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth.  A natural tooth is comprised of a crown and a root.  The crown is the large and white section of the tooth that is visible when a mouth is open.  The root is underneath the gums as it extends to the jawbone and provides support.  Dental implants mimic this same structure.  The implant replaces the root in which a crown is placed.

Dental implants are made of three parts.  The first is the implant itself which is inserted to the bone.  The second is the abutment.  The abutment is the piece that connects the implant to the crown.  Which bring me to the third part, the crown itself.  Most of the implants are made of titanium as it is durable and compatible to fuse with bone.

Do you need dental implants?
First thing first, if you are questioning the need for dental implants, be sure to make an appointment to consult with Drs. Versman, Heller, and Beckman, and they will be sure comprise a personalized treatment plan.  Dental implants are great for those who have a single missing tooth, several missing teeth, or need a full replacement set.  Dental implants are great replacements for dentures or bridges.  Implants are strong and durable to help you eat normally.  They also have the look and feel of natural teeth.  So, yes it’s true, you can get your beautiful smile back.  If you do not believe, look at these testimonials from our Denver patients.

 How are they placed?
The word ‘implant’ can make the procedure sound complicated and intimidating, but most implant surgeries are performed safely within a dentist’s office, like here at Periodontal Associates.  Dental implants are placed during a simple outpatient procedure.  For some procedures, forms of patient sedation may be used, such as nitrous oxide.  Every treatment is different depending on the situation, preferences, or patient, but all are safe and with a high percent of success rate. (Especially if your doctor is Dr.Versman, Dr. Heller, or Dr. Beckman).

Now that you have learned about dental implants, you may have realized that there is a way to improve your quality of life, and it is not difficult. Even if you have lost just one tooth – whether it is a new situation or something you have lived with for years – chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself.

Olympic Dental Health

Dental Thrills and Olympic Grills!

It is that time of the year again, where Americans sit too closely to their television, wring their hands, and visualize themselves winning a gold medal just like the Olympic athletes seen in front of them.  However, if you want to mimic them, not only do you need to start training daily, but you will also need to pay close attention to your dental health and maintain a close relationship with your doctor (Dr. Versman, Dr. Heller, or Dr. Beckman).

Athletes know that in order to be at the top of their game, they need to live a healthy life, including well maintained teeth and gums.  The Olympic Village in London actually embraced a state-of-the-art dental clinic run by volunteer doctors and hygienists in order to provide care to thousands of athletes and staff throughout the 2012 summer games.  Paul Warren, Director of Global Professional and Scientific Relations for Procter & Gamble Co., states that this facility provides basic care and restoration as some athletes may come from countries in which preventive oral care is not offered.

Physical Injuries

The clinic also provides mouth guards for athletes. This is very important as dental implants for those under the age of 35 is commonly due to physical injuries while those older than 35 is more commonly occurred from periodontal disease and caries.  The clinic even offers a dentist to attend contact events where a mouth injury is more likely to ensue. Dentist Dr. Tony Clough, who was the primary force in developing the dental program for the 2012 games and also volunteered in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing  stated, "The biggest priority is going to be emergency care like broken teeth and abscesses, which are going to happen among 40,000 people."

With popularity in dental care rising among athletes, one can only hope they will become advocates for dental health. “When athletes go home with medals around their necks, they often become ambassadors for their sports, their countries, and, it is hoped for preventive oral health”, Warren said. With 14,700 athletes at the games coming from over 205 countries, we hope that is enough role models to spark more interest in dental maintenance. (and here in the Denver- Aurora, CO area, we are proud to say Missy Franklin is among those athletes.)

GRILLS?

One athlete in particular has already caught the attention of viewers with his teeth antics.  Ryan Lochte’s grill cost him $25,000, and he states, “It’s a way of showing my unique personality to everyone.” Not everyone appreciates his over the top smile like he does, but as long as his teeth are healthy and protected underneath, Periodontal Associates, Dr. Versman, Dr. Heller, and Dr. Beckman are supportive.
If you are trying to find your personality again, a beautiful smile is a great way to start.  At Periodontal Associates, you may not be walking out with a diamond encrusted grill; however, you WILL walk out with a perfected smile you will want to show off all the same.  Stop by our office today in the Denver- Aurora, CO area to see how we can turn your vision and turn it into a reality or contact us at (303) 755-4500 to schedule your appointment to see Dr. Versman, Heller, or Beckman.

A New Perspective on Anxiety

You'd be amazed at how many of our new patients tell us they experience some form of anxiety or fear about visiting the dentist - particularly a practice like ours that specializes in implants and other more "invasive" procedures like bone regeneration and restoration. We get it. We understand that going to the dentist is not something most people look forward to. And we know that dental anxiety is real. But we want to help alleviate that anxiety so our patients can get the treatment that they need without extra stress and tension.

There are a variety of widely accepted coping mechanisms to assist with dental anxiety. These tips and techniques are derived from an understanding of some of the root causes of anxiety and can be implemented at our office at any time. You should never be afraid to speak up and tell your dentist or periodontist that you are uncomfortable or nervous about the procedure so steps can be taken to ensure you have a positive experience.

We understand dental anxiety and fear - and we have a large percentage of patients who experience some degree of nervousness about their appointments and treatments. It's a very common phenomenon and we encourage you to notify us of any concerns when you make your appointment. It's nothing we haven't heard before - and our first priority is you, the patient, and our commitment to making sure you have healthy teeth and gums for years to come!

What do those numbers mean to me and my Dentist?

Pockets in my gums?

Have you ever wondered what those numbers mean that your Denver Dentist or Hygienist calls out while checking your teeth and gums? Or what those numbers mean in relation to gum disease?

At your dental visit the dentist or hygienist should perform a screening where a tiny ruler called a 'probe' is used to check for and measure any pockets in your gums. This probe is a depth measurement device - the measurements are taken in millimeters (mm). With very little pressure the probe is slipped down next to the root of the tooth until there is resistance. The mark which is then at the gum line demonstrates the depth of the gum pocket. You'll often hear your dentist or hygienist calling out numbers, or the pocket depth. In a healthy mouth, free of gum disease, the depth of these pockets is usually between 1 and 3 millimeters.

See the guide below:

If your numbers are in the higher range, you will often be referred to a periodontist. Dr. Ken Versman and Dr. Doug Heller of Periodontal Associates are Periodontists who are specially trained to diagnose and treat gum disease and dental implants. Periodontal Associates is conveniently located in Aurora, Colorado and serves the entire Denver metro area.
